LINE OF DEACON JOHN DUNHAM OF PLYMOUTH

FOURTH GENERATION IN AMERICA

282. JONATHAN 4 DUNHAM (Joseph 3,2 John 1) born say 1723. There is no recorded death for Jonathan, and no probate record. Nor is there any recorded marriage for this Jonathan. However, he does not seem to be the Jonathan who was son of Ephraim and Annis (Smith) Donham, as that Jonathan resided in another part of Middleborough, and the deeds recorded for that Jonathan are all near his residence.

Plymouth Co. LR 42:30, dated 28 March 1752 abstracted below seems to indicate a close relationship between the sons of Joseph 3 Dunham, and Jonathan is placed here on that basis. It is to be noted that Elkanah Leonard was a highly respected attorney who resided in Middleborough and who often bought parcels of land to hold on a temporary basis when the previous owners were in need of cash. Elkanah Leonard apparently suffered from mental anxiety after the death of his wife, which occurred about this time, and that is probably the reason he is given in this deed as “non compos”. [1]

[Plymouth Co. LR 42:30] states..Land of Elkanah Leonard who is non compos— sold to Jonathan Dunham; the 15th lot of land in first allotment called Sixteen Shilling Purchase in Middleboro; the same lot that was Joseph Dunham’s decd., and same lot said Donham bought of McFarland... bounded northerly by (and till It comes to) lot of Bethia Dunham, being the same lot that Stephen Dunham now dwells and county road formerly called “Taunton Path”, now called Rhode Island Road...

Witness: Caleb Dunham

There are no children recorded for Jonathan Dunham.
